Form Good Habits With These 3 Important Things

November 24, 2020/in Blog, Breaking Bad Habits, Philosophy

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? A lot of people do this as a way to create new good habits that will transform their lives for the better. These resolutions are usually based on hope and are often made in a drunken haze. What are the chances of people following through with these resolutions?

The reality is that most people give up on their New Year’s resolution a few days after they make them. There is no foundation behind the resolutions and they quickly become abandoned and people live their lives as they always did.

In this article, we will discuss three important things that will provide a solid foundation that you need to form good habits and keep them going. If you really want to form new empowering habits that will last then you need to take these seriously.

developing good habits

Is your Life in Order?

Willpower alone is never enough to form a good habit and make it stick. You know that exercising regularly is the right thing for you to do and you join the gym like so many others do and then stop following through because it is tougher than you thought or something else gets in the way.
Psychological experts state that the best time to form a new good habit is when your life is under control. It takes at least 21 days to become accustomed to a new habit and then around 66 days on average for your new routine to truly become a habit.
This means that you need to pay close attention to your new habit. If your life is chaotic then this will be very challenging for you. So if a lot of other things in your life steal your time or stress you out then fix these prior to attempting to form a new habit.

Go for one New Habit at a time

It is not going to be easy to form a new habit. You are going to need a lot of persistence and be committed to change. If you try to form more than one new habit then this is going to be almost impossible for you to do as you will not be able to divide your time, effort, and attention effectively enough to make them both stick.
You need to be patient here. Identify the most important new habit that you want to form and then prioritize any others after this. Even if you can devote all of your time to forming more than one habit it is very likely to fail. So just form one new habit at a time.

Make Gradual Changes

When you first make the decision to form a new habit it is understandable that you are going to be excited and get into it straight away. You have decided that you will exercise more and that this is going to part of your new daily routine. But is this really a practical thing for you?
If you have never exercised regularly before, or it has been a long time, it is going to be incredibly difficult to start doing this every day. It is better to start with gentle exercise three times a week and gradually build this up. Over time you can exercise more often as you are used to doing this.
